Forces and motion

Two masses, one string, one number you cannot see.

Newton's second law is one line long. The art is choosing what to point it at — sometimes the whole system, sometimes a single particle, and the two choices tell you different things.

The set-up

AA is 5 kg, BB is 3 kg, joined by a light inextensible string over a smooth pulley and released from rest.

The string cannot stretch, so both have the same size of acceleration. The pulley is smooth, so the tension is the same on both sides.

One equation each

Apply F=maF = ma once per particle, each in its own direction of motion: down is positive for AA, up is positive for BB.

5g−T=5aT−3g=3a5g - T = 5a \qquad T - 3g = 3a

The tension vanishes

Unwrap the pulley: one body of 8 kg, with 5g5g hauling one way and 3g3g the other.

2g=8a  ⇒  a=14g=2.45 m s−22g = 8a \;\Rightarrow\; a = \tfrac{1}{4}g = 2.45\text{ m s}^{-2}

The tension is internal — equal and opposite on AA and BB — so the whole system can never show it.

Then one body on its own

The system handed over aa and hid TT. To get the tension, go back to a single particle — take the lighter one:

T=3g+3a=36.75≈36.8 NT = 3g + 3a = 36.75 \approx 36.8\text{ N}

Three significant figures, because gg is only known to two.

What the pulley feels

The string pulls down on the pulley on both sides, so the force on the pulley is 2T=73.5 N2T = 73.5\text{ N} — not TT, and not the combined weight.

And a tension is never just a weight. If TT were 3g3g, BB's equation would give a=0a = 0 and nothing would move at all.

Chapter 3

Whole system first, then one body.

All three of Newton's laws, lifts and normal reactions, forces as vectors, cars and trailers, particles on tables, and twelve graded exam questions with full worked solutions are waiting.
